Thats right guys. Microsoft has released their own free Security Suite for Windows users. It has full integration with Windows Vista and Windows 7, I am not sure about XP.
The software is resource friendly with a clean interface, the virus scans run relatively quickly, AND there is spyware monitoring (real-time) and automatic updates. The only thing I can think of that they should have included is maybe an advanced module for the already existing Windows Firewall. There is just not enough options / configurability for that in my opinion.
It seems to me like some of the big guys (Symantec and Trend Micro) are a little worried about this new addition to the MS family of software…
“MSE appears to be little more than a bad rerun of Microsoft’s infamous history of offering consumers incomplete and ineffective protection,” -Mike Plante, Senior Director of marketing strategy and branding. After some more ranting, he closes with “At the end of the day, MSE is a rerun no one should watch.”
I mean come on.. How are you going to shoot down a FREE security suite designed to work perfectly with the latest versions of windows? Oh thats right.. When you charge hundreds of dollars for a Security Suite that lets infections like Rogue Antivirus through to destroy productivity on millions of users PC’s. Gotcha. At the end of the Day, Mr. Plante, we appreciate efforts like this especially when the market is crap and everyone needs to save money wherever they can.
I believe it was someone over at Trend Micro who after taking similar shots at MS for their efforts in making a decent free Security Suite said “Besides, When was the last time Microsoft did something Innovative?” Ouch. Coming from a company that has used the same Virus engine forever..
But yea Microsoft Security Essentials is free and a great addition to the Windows OS. You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
ENJOY!

It works fine with windows xp : )
I’ve been on and off with anti-virus programs over the years. I’ve used a whole bunch of them, but I’ve always settled with some of microsofts programs (earlier windef, now MSE). Nothing, including the leading brands like norton and kaspersky etc, has ever managed to find any viruses when I’ve tried them. Which means winDef was doing a fine job.
Then I’ve been without any anti-virus programs for over three years, doing extensive surfing several hours a day… still no viruses.
When I go to my friends, their computers totally slowed down by all of their AV programs, yet still being spammed by viruses… a smile appears : )
First time coming here, really nice site you’ve got.
