If you own Gears of War for PC and you still play it (ha ha), then you are getting this error when you launch the game:

“You cannot run the game with modified executable code. Please reinstall the game.”

gears

Why? Apparently, the certificate for the DRM (Digital Rights Management) for Gears 1 PC version has expired. I haven’t heard yet if Epic is planning on fixing this issue, but don’t get your hopes up because it is well known that Epic Games does not take kindly to PC Gamers. While Gears 2 was in the making, Cliff Bleszinski (GoW design director) and company announced that they will not be porting Gears 2 to PC, and basically indicated that PC gamers are all software pirates. Well F you too buddy.

So that is the reason you are getting the error, and that is the story behind it (summed up).  If you were planning on buying this game for PC, or even for console, don’t.   It won’t work for PC anymore (as of now anyway), and EPIC SUCKS and fu**ed over a lot of PC gamers who spent their hard earned money on this game.

There are plenty of better games out there for PC than Gears 1. Please, for the love of GOD go get something good.

EDIT:

Ive been researching this and it appears EPIC has commented on this issue.

Here is their response to IGN.com:

“The online cheat detection features in Gears of War for Windows are based on digital signatures. Well, we made an embarrassing mistake: we signed the executable with a certificate that expired in a way that broke the game.

We’re working with Microsoft to re-sign the binaries properly, and hope to have this fixed very soon. We know how much this situation sucks, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

In the mean time a work-around for this is to set your computer’s date back to a date before today.”

There you have it.  The temporary solution to this problem is to set your clock back. My advice is just set it back 1 year so you dont mess up your time or month.  Hey, at least they admit that they fu**ed up.

I will post an update when they announce an offical fix for this.

Happy Gaming!

EDIT:

There is now a patch out that completely resolves this issue and you no longer need to modify your PC’s date/time.  I have uploaded it to the site, and it is available for download below:

  6. I have created a .bat file that will let the game run…. the problem is an expired
certificate… this batch file does 4 things
    1. gets current system date.
    2. changes system date to 01-01-08(prior to certificate expiration).
    3. Starts Game.
    4. restores system date upon game exit.
