It appears that large percentage of the people who own this game have this problem.  It is not always the same issues, however.  Some people have the main issue where during the cutscenes they just hear static, then it comes back for a second and more static.  Some people have that issue plus sound only comes out of one speaker for the majority of the game.

In my research I have found one possible fix for this if you are running Windows XP or Vista and Realtek chipset so far.  There has been no confirmation that this worked, but if someone can try this and post a reply with your results, it would be GREATLY appreciated.  If it doesn’t work then as always I will further my research on the topic.

Possible Solution in Windows XP:Silent Hill

1. Open the control panel

2. Open sounds and Audio Devices

3. Navigate to the Volume Tab

4. Click “Advanced” near speaker settings

5. At this point you may have to test out a few options and see how it affects the sound quality for your specific configuration. Apparently the 5.1 option may work better even if you don’t have 5.1 speakers (go figure)

6. So save and apply the 5.1 and 7.1 options and see if either works better for you

Possible Solution in Windows Vista:

1. Open the control panel

2. Under Sound choose Manage Audio Devices

3. Right click on Speakers and click Configure Speakers

4. At this point you may have to test out a few options and see how it affects the sound quality for your specific configuration. Apparently the 5.1 or 7.1 option may work better even if you don’t have 5.1 or 7.1 speakers (go figure)

5. So save and apply the 5.1 and 7.1 options and see if either works better for you

As always, please post a reply here to let us know if this worked for you, and if you find any other solutions then post them too!

Hope this helps

  6. I’m using vista and realtek (curses!!!) and though i could come to use your advice, i opened the sound menu, went to the speakers and to the realtek digital output, optimizations and choose the immediate mode option.

    That seemed to work.

    cheers and good luck

  7. *i couldn’t come to use your advice

  8. Also the game’s advanced filter and sound virtualization should be off.

Though minor distortion still occurs the game plays very well.

    Cheers

  9. No this doesnt solve anything and btw whatever new soundcard you have they provide you with an own mixer program just as realtek for 5.1.

And even if I put it to headphone the animation sound and video is lagging. Ingame however there is no problem but since the videos give you the story line it’s suck balls.
