This happened to me today while trying to play some Day of Defeat Source. I figured I would just throw something up here letting people who are new to STEAM know what it means. That usually happens when they just updated a game (in my case Day of Defeat Source). The problem is the servers are still running the last version until they are rebooted or manually upgraded. The Steam client automatically downloads the client side updates for you, and that is why you can’t play on the outdated servers. Give it about a day at this point and most of the servers should be ready to go.
Enjoy
PS Steam is awesome!

Hey guys –
I just wanted to let you know that if you have this problem, not to worry because it will be gone by tomorrow. It just means the servers need to be restarted before you can play again.
This is because when an update is released, your Steam client downloads the updates right away, and the servers that host the game don’t update until the morning after the update. When the server version and the client version don’t match, you can not play the game. So you can’t play until the morning after the update. It sucks but usually the update is worth it anyway!
Hope this clears things up.
