Let’s talk about what makes a great gaming mouse. First off, lets start with ergonomics. The Logitech G9 Laser mouse comes with 2 interchangeable grips, one smooth and one rough texture (Wide Load and Precision) . The precision grip is made with a “DryGrip” coating, which was designed to absorb perspiration. If you go to LAN parties you know how intense a tournament can get, this grip will help those bullets meet their target during those long gaming sessions. Both of these grips make the G9 fit perfectly into my claw grip style, but also work well with the Palm and Flat finger grips as well (this mouse is great for any hand size). Logitech gave
this one a solid feel, and you can always use the nifty weights they give you to find the perfect balance.

Next, lets talk buttons. It comes with 2 left side buttons (usually known for back/forward directory or browser window) which on the G9 is placed perfectly for in game use. I suggest trying to set these to your grenades and special grenades in FPS, but I’ll leave that for you to play with. The left and right click on this mouse is very responsive, and dont feel like they will eventually lose springback. The G9 exclusively features the MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel, which you can really feel each rotating click, making it perfect for your weapon cycling. Its even great for web browsing on long pages because on the bottom of the mouse, you can press the button for hyper-fast “frictionless” scrolling. It also features horizontal scrolling, good for websites, spreadsheets, charts, etc.
Another appealing spec to gamers is the insane speeds. With customizable dpi from 200 – 3200, it is almost impossible not to find a speed thats right for you (screen size and resolution is a big factor here too). And of course it uses USB 2.x speed @ 1000 reports per second. Also, you can store up to 5 profile settings (speed, button configurations, etc) into the onboard mouse memory until you clear of change it.
Lets move on to some more features. Did I mention this mouse has Custom Color LED Display? Thats right, they give you a spectrum to choose from, and it lights up the little running man on the top of the mouse (color and numeral represent profile setting and speed).
All in all, this is definitely a quality product from Logitech, although the $89 on newegg is enough to make even some enthusiasts think twice about settling for a G5. If you dont mind spending $95 (shipping or tax), and you want the best edge in the FPS, I would definitely say this is the mouse for you. If you don’t need the extra features and comfort, my next choice would be the Logitech G5 which is around half the price. Keep in mind before deciding, the G5 only has one left side button (usually the back button) vs 2 on the G9 (frag and flash grenades easy access in one place on the G9).
* Logitech SetPoint software may need to be downloaded and installed in order to initially set all the buttons functions. Not an intrusive software so dont worry about that. The interface is self explanatory, usefull for macros too.

EDIT: I found out that the G5 does in fact come with 2 side buttons.. The one that I used / reviewed was the Battlefield 2142 edition which for some strange reason they only included one side mouse button. Mind boggling! Just wanted to clear that up.
